Dieter Dengler was a German-born United States Navy aviator during the Vietnam War. He was one of two survivors out of seven prisoners of war who escaped from a prison camp in Laos. He was rescued after 23 days on the run following six months of torture and imprisonment and was the first captured U.S. airman to escape enemy captivity during the Vietnam war.
Blue Door Films was forged when a studio was created in the back building of a rented house in Mill Valley, California. This house was owned by Dieter’s son. Werner Herzog, a famous film Director, made a documentary about Dieter’s story, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, and used the house as a backdrop. Later he made a movie of Dieter’s story called “Rescue Dawn” starring Christian Bale.
The front door to the house instantly stood out. On each side of the door are half circle windows. Engraved in ornate frosted lettering are the words “Good” on one side and “Things” on the other. We soon learned that Dieter himself built the house and specifically designed this door so that every time he walked through it he would be walking through “Good Things.”
After this man was tortured and suffered beyond comprehension, he vowed to have only good things come and go from his life. A truly inspiring story that made all of us at Blue Door Films adopt “Good Things” as our mantra in life and work forever.
